Introduction to Cricket

Last night Shawn introduced me to the sport of cricket. The Caribbean Premier League is currently playing their annual Twenty20 tournament and last night was the match between the Barbados Tridents and the Jamaica Tallawahs. I should point out that this specific league has only been in existence since 2013. Jamaica won the first tournament and Barbados is the current reigning champion.

Of course I had lots of questions and Shawn patiently answered them for me. I won’t go into all the details, but it appears to be a game with some significant strategy involved. I  definitely enjoyed the first 2 hours of the match. Barbados was at bat (hitting? smacking the ball? trying to score runs?) and ended their 20 overs with 161/4 (161 runs with 4 batters/hitters/smackers/runners out).  However, a cricket match is L-O-N-G….thank goodness each team only played 20 overs. Apparently there’s a format where they play 50 overs. I did not see Jamaica at bat. I woke up to Shawn taking my glasses off and putting them on the dresser.  I only found out this morning that Barbados did indeed win the match. The Tridents play again tomorrow and Shawn has asked me over to watch that match too.

Speaking of Shawn, here is a picture from dinner on Sunday.

Today was a relaxing day. I walked home from Shawn’s this morning and then I spent the day knitting and doing some writing. Tonight will be a quiet evening alone. I currently have some tuna marinating in lime juice, oil, basil, garlic, soya sauce and pepper. I’ll grill it, with some onions and peppers and cook up some rice to have with it.

I was just going to say – you have Australian friends and you’ve only just been introduced to cricket now!!! Definitely the most boring sport on the entire planet! 🙂

For me, baseball takes the prize for most boring sport on the planet. 😀

I quite enjoyed watching last night’s match, as the Barbados Tridents beat the Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel. The Red Steel certainly didn’t have a good night, as they were at 26/5 by the 6th over. They ended their 20 overs with 95/9. The Tridents only needed 13 overs to get 98/2. Tomorrow I think the Tridents play the St. Lucia Zouks.

Edited to add: Oops, I am mistaken. Barbados plays the St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots tomorrow.

  2. Oh cricket. Aussies are obsessed with it but I never could get into it. Especially those long test matches. I’d rather watch paint dry. It was one of the largest perks of moving out of my parents’ home. Dad used to have it on all the time, or so it seemed. You seem to have more patience than me!
